The 7-storey, newly renovated AXA Bank headquarters in Berchem, just outside the city limits of Antwerp, has been rebuilt around the concrete carcass of the orginal 1970s office building. While the sober horizontal lines of the project express a sense of strenghth and stability for the well-known financial group, the building has been completely opened up. The building’s large, glass bays and penthouse form a transition between the city of Antwerp and its immediate, more low-rise suburbs.
When compared to the previous building, the new AXA headquarters uses 30% less electricity and as much as 50% less gas. It will also save 900 tons of CO2, or the equivalent of 32,000 trees. The development provides office space for 1,400 people and is the headquarters for all of AXA’s activities in Belgium, including its Antwerp based insurance division.
